Basic Info
Name:Edward Elric
Birthdate:1988-02-02
Bio
[SHRIMP.STATURE] [FULLMETAL.HEART]

CHARACTER:
Name: Edward Elric
Age: 18
Series: FullMetal Alchemist
Gender: Male

Personality: Edward is not one to be described in merely a word, a sentence, or a paragraph...unless that word is "complex". He cares so much for people without caring what they think about him. He uses the established system for his own needs, even while rebelling against it and in some instances destroying it entirely. He is a man without religion, yet he is a man who bears all sins, claiming them as his own. He is mature, and yet he lets the smallest thing set him off. He is brave, and yet not enough to share his fears with them who love him best. He loves so much, but he pushes his loved ones away to protect them. He is selfless, yet so selfish; young, but so old. He is a contradiction; he is still so young, but he has lived and seen so much of life and of death.

Edward doesn't do things to please anyone but himself (and Alphonse). This doesn't mean he won'd do things that benefit others; his methods, however, are such that he doesn't care what the people he's helping think about him. He is perfectly at home with being thought a bastard even while he's doing the people good. Edward prefers cunning to showy heroics. He does have a taste for dramatics, though, and enjoys being smug when he knows he's "won".

One thing he will never be good at, however, is learning to control his reaction to height comments. Despite being so learned for his age, despite all his experiences and the maturity he's gained from them, he always reverts to a pissy five-year-old when someone even hints that he is below average height. Though he has gotten better about it over the past couple years, for certain people, he cannot help but become defensive.

Edward hates authority. Whether it be the church, a corrupt government official, or Colonel Roy Mustang, Edward is constantly suspicious of these people, and often brings about some form of change wherever he goes. This isn't his main purpose at all; he just seems to do this naturally. His main driving purpose is always closer to home and heart, and he will do anything and everything for family. Family- what he has of it left- is the most important thing in the world(s) to him, and he will stop at nothing to be together with them.

Abilities/Strengths: Edward is a skilled alchemist. In his world, alchemy is performed by drawing elaborate transmutation circles that allow the user to transform one object into another, as long as it follows the law of Equivalent Exchange. Edward, however, is an exception in that he does not have to draw circles to transmute, but merely with a clap of his hands can transmute things.

Alchemy, in Ed's world, is a science, and works similarly to chemistry in that the study of elements is key. The energy for these transmutations, as Ed learns later in the series, comes from the other side of "the Gate". The Gate seems to be many things- it serves as the go-between the two worlds, yet it's also been said that the Gate is within every human being when they are born. When one performs human transmutation, and attempts to bring back what was lost, such as Ed and Al did, they are brought before the Gate, where they face "the Truth", i.e. a vast amount of alchemic knowledge and even the nature of life as well. It is by seeing some of the Truth within the Gate that Edward is able to perform circle-less transmutation, as well as where he learned to bind Al's soul to the suit of armor.

Besides alchemy, Edward has also been trained in hand-to-hand combat by his teacher Izumi Curtis. She taught him and Al that before they trained their mind, they must first train their body. After they trained with her for months, Ed and Al still spar regularly as a routine, to keep their bodies as well as their minds fit. Edward is skilled because of all his training, but he's never been able to beat Al, armored body or not.

Weaknesses: His major weakness is how easily angered he can be. At the mere mention of his (lack of) height, Ed exaggerates the insult, and his reaction is much more than the situation warrants. Because it is easy to anger him, opponents can use this to make Ed fly into a rage, which means his thinking is less clear and that he is more likely to make a mistake in battle (a very good example of this is in the match between Edward and Mustang, where Ed was hiding amongst the crowd where Roy couldn't possibly find him, so he called Ed short, Ed gave away his position by spazzing out, and was immediately attacked.)

Ed's other major weakness is his brother, Alphonse. He willingly risks his own life to save Al. First, when the Gate took Al's body, Ed told the Gate "I don't care what the toll is! Take my other leg! Or my arm! Take both of them! You can even have my heart. Just give him [Al] back!" Then, later on when Scar attempted to kill Edward, he tried to tell Al to run away, even though he wasn't Scar's target. And then, when Ed died and Al brought him back to life but sacrificed himself in order to do so, Ed's first thought upon "awakening" was to his brother, and he willingly risked death again to bring Al back.

History: Edward Elric was born in Resembool, in Amestris, to Hohenheim and Trisha Elric, and a year later his brother Alphonse was born. They were probably happy, the four of them...but then, before Al could barely walk, their father walked out on them. It was something that Ed woulds never forget, and in his heart, never truly forgive either.

But the three of them lived together for ten years in happiness. Ed and Al at an early age taught themselves alchemy, and studied the science for the smiles their mother gave them whenever they created something for her. But then, when Edward was ten, Trisha fell ill and died.

Deciding that they couldn't live without her, Ed promised Al that they would find a way through alchemy to bring her back. They found a teacher, Izumi Curtis, who trained them in alchemy, and when they thought they had learned enough, Ed and Al returned home and implemented their theory. Ed had been sure it would work.

But something went wrong, and Al lost his whole body and Ed half of his left leg to the Gate. Because Edward wasn't about to lose his whole family, he sacrificed his right arm in exchange for sealing Al's soul to a suit of armor, all that he could get from the Gate.

After their failed attempt at human transmutation and a visit from then Lt. Colonel Mustang, Edward got an automail leg and arm and vowed to join the military as a State Alchemist and get Al his body back. After the recovery from his surgery, Ed and Al left for Central, burning their house so they would have only one choice- to move forward, because they had no place to go back to.

Ed and Al, who was determined to take the test with his brother, were placed with Shou Tucker, the Sewing Life Alchemist, and his four-year old daughter Nina. There they studied until it was time to take the test, and Edward passed, becoming the youngest State Alchemist ever at 12 years old. It certainly didn't hurt that he had developed the special ability to perform alchemy without a circle. (for physical purposes Al did not finish the exam- i.e. he had no body and that would have been hard to explain).

Soon after Ed became a State Alchemist and was given the title "FullMetal", he and Al first heard of the Philosopher's Stone. It soon became their obsession to find it, as they were convinced that only with the Philosopher's Stone would they be able to overcome the law of equivalent exchange and get Al his body back. It took them over four years of searching before they finally found it.

What happened was this. Humonculi, creations of failed human transmutations, have been creating wars over the country and spreading fake red stones across Amestris in the hopes of finding an alchemist who could create the real Philosopher's Stone. A few, like Lust, believe that they will be able to become human with the Stone. But later on it was revealed that a woman named Dante was controlling the humonculi to get her a stone so that she could continue her immortal life.

However, it was not the humonculi who created the stone, but an Ishbalan known as Scar, who had been going around killing State Alchemists. Long story short, Al ended up becoming the Philosopher's Stone. Many came after him, and Al was kidnapped by Dante. Ed managed to find him, but in a fight with Envy, was killed. Al, using the Philosopher's Stone, brought him back.

Only for Edward to attempt to bring Al back. He succeeded, but in exchange Edward ended up going through the gate, connecting their world to a parallel world, where Ed found many familiar faces.

One of these was Alfons Heiderich, the spitting image of what Al would have looked like had he not been stuck in a suit of armor for four years. Alfons was interested in rocketry and Edward, thinking that perhaps through that he could find a way back to Al.

He wasn't the only one searching for a way through the Gate, though these others thought that what they were searching for was "Shamballa". They managed to open the Gate, with Ed's unwilling help, especially when he learned that they planned on using his world, his people, to help them fight a war in their world. Ed goes through the Gate to stop them, though once they arrive, they start attacking Amestris instead.

Edward is briefly reunited with friends, sees Al at long last in his human body again, then setd off to stop the intruders. He succeeds with Al and Mustang's help, and then tells them goodbye, that he is returning through the Gate, to close it on that side so that nothing like this will happen again. Al begs him not to leave, but even though Edward hated to do so, he turned his back on his brother and walked away.

When he arrived back in Germany, the first thing he saw was Alfons' dead body. Then something dark and covered with Gate-residue emerged from the vessal behind Ed...and that's the last thing he remembers.

...until he wakes in that room on the airship, alone...
